New Policy on “Authorship, Contributorship, and Artificial Intelligence” and New Section “Forum”

2025-11-13

M&M recently updated its journal policies. In addition to minor revisions and clarifications, two major changes are worth highlighting:

(1) There is a completely new policy on “Authorship, Contributorship, and Artificial Intelligence,” which outlines the journal’s stance on authorship (including co-authorship with non-academic research partners), non-author contributorship, and the use of AI in submissions to the journal. In his new editorial, M&M’s Managing Editor Malik Sharif explains key aspects of this policy and the main considerations behind it: “On Authorship Criteria in Music and Minority Studies, Ethnomusicology, and Related Disciplines” (https://doi.org/10.52413/mm.2025.51).

(2) M&M has introduced a new section titled “Forum.” This section provides a space for contributions that do not fall into the established categories of peer-reviewed articles or reviews, but are of lasting value to the field of study covered by the journal’s scope. Contributions may include, but are not limited to, interviews with relevant artists, concise position statements or opinion pieces on current debates in music and minority studies, “call & response” formats, or more experimental kinds of writing on issues within M&M’s scope. The first contribution to this section is scheduled for spring 2026. M&M invites interested authors to propose contributions to this section (mm-journal@mdw.ac.at)! See the “Instructions for Authors” for further details.
